Early decades of California's wine industry found this commonly grown grape used as the backbone of blended red "jug" wines, where it provided spice and fragrance to the more heady and densely colored blending grapes. Today we're lucky to revisit this heritage varietal, allowing wine lovers to appreciate Carignane for it's own qualities.
Out of respect for vines their ancestors planted, Mendocino County grape farmers Tom and Pamela Ricetti struggle to keep Carignane and other rare varietals available to us. At their Redwood Valley vineyard, Tom tills the same rich soil and prunes the same vines as his father - harvesting grapes derived from generations of labor. I'm grateful to partner with such heritage-rich growers and hope you'll try our other wines made from nearly forgotten vineyards.
