Pacific Star Petite Sirah 2005
|
From the historic Brown Vineyard in Redwood Valley - supple elegant tannins show the graceful style this
vineyard can produce with controlled yield and the patience to allow the grapes to ripen fully. With the
science of DNA identification applied to grape varieties, we now know that Petite Sirah is a cross between
French Syrah (Shiraz in Australia) and an obscure grape called Pelorsin. Created in the 1880’s by a plant
biologist named Dr. Durif – the grape is known as Durif in France and traveled to California with immigrants
at the turn of the century. Susceptibility to rot due to its tightly packed clusters, it is notoriously difficult to
grow. Producing acres dipped to a low of under 2,000 in the 90’s - a comeback is alive and well among
winemakers who cherish its versatility in blends as well as its sturdy dark beauty.
